No Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico for Wout van Aert, but an altitude internship on Tenerife. In one week, the leader of Visma-Lease a Bike has already covered more than 900 km.
Wout van Aert took Tiesj Benoot on the time trial bike.
He “doesn’t have to do anything”, but Wout van Aert would love to win the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix this year. It is his motivation during a tough altitude training around Mount Teide on Tenerife.
Since his victory in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, Van Aert has been working up a sweat around the Spanish volcano. He has already covered 900.12 km in one week, and that is not counting his two running sessions.
Yesterday he conquered the KOM at Vilaflor de El Roque in a ride with more than 3,000 meters of altitude. He proved that he was not done yet by putting on his Belgian champion jersey for 50 km on the time trial bike in the afternoon. The new time trial helmet from Visma-Lease a Bike was omitted.
Will those efforts bear fruit at the end of this month? Van Aert will return to the peloton on March 22 for the E3 Saxo Classic. This will be followed by Dwars door Vlaanderen (27/03), the Tour of Flanders (31/03) and Paris-Roubaix (07/04).
